John Vale
John Vale subscribed to the “cojelo suave” style of the OchoPlacas team in 2002. Born to Cuban parents, Vale is related to legendary artist Leopoldo Romanach. The Miami-native took a page from the family history book when he began drawing at the age of four, and now creates in a range of mediums including painting, sculpture and tattoo.
At 13 years, Vale obtained his first tattoo however breaking into the industry in his young adulthood as a professional artist proved to be more challenging. He instead pierced at various South Florida parlors and was a regular on the industry circuit. It is during his tenure as a piercer and apprentice at Silhouette Studios in Miami that he met Carrera, who was also then finishing his apprenticeship as a tattoo artist.
Ultimately the leap between the latter art forms - from piercing to tattoos - brought Vale and shop owner Jose Carrera together. The two developed an affinity for each other’s creative talent and learned from their respective techniques. Cuando Carrera embarked on an entrepreneurial endeavor to launch OchoPlacas, a tattoo shop on the famed “Calle Ocho,” he called upon former co-worker Vale, insisting that he fulfill his true vocation as a tattoo artist.
Vale has since made his mark as one of Miami’s premiere talents. Having established his name in the industry and “earned his stripes” at OchoPlacas, editors of prominent magazines and locals alike flock to the 6’4” friendly giant, who, when not tattooing can be found lounging on the sillon chair outside Ocho Placas or playing with his band Furious Dudes. Oye, Gwow!
